The Mentor Mark Bouris recently featured on Channel 7’s ‘The Morning Show’ to give away some of his advice for business owners.

1. Personal health is a catalyst for a healthy business.

For Bouris, success starts with personal health. A keen boxer, Mark says that remaining active every day is a catalyst for him to tackle any issue with his business.

“You’ve got to go into your business with a healthy mind – and it’s about your mental health, generally,” Bouris said.

“I think business owners suffer from a lot of trauma because they’re dealing with banks, the government, the tax office, the customers, suppliers and landlords – and they’re all traumatising.

“So mental health is really important, and one way of dealing with mental health I think is through exercise.”

2. Stop thinking small.

At Mentored, we’re not a fan of the term ‘Small business’ in certain contexts.

Mark himself has been outspoken about how the term can be used in quite a demeaning manner, and misrepresents what small business contributes to society.

He said, “I don’t want people to think of themselves as being small, I want people to think of themselves as being significant.

“If you keep loading this moniker onto business people, they’re going to think in small ways, and they’re going to start to assume being small – that is, ‘I don’t deserve anything because I’m insignificant.’

“That bothers me, because the business market, the people who employ 60 per cent of all employees, fit into that small business category.

“2.2 million small businesses employ 60 per cent of everyone in Australia. By any measure, that is significant.”

3. Get some structure in your business.

One of the most daunting numbers in business is the failure rate: 60% of small businesses will close in their first three years and according to Mark Bouris, it’s because they lack the proper support to help them set up and structure a solid business.

“The one mistake just about all of them make is that they don’t have a structure,” he said.

“I don’t mean having a company versus a trust or that sort of stuff – I mean a rhythm that you abide by every single day.

“That goes right down to how you treat yourself in the morning when you first get out of bed to how you build your systems and processes. There is a structure to running a business successfully, and it’s something I’m really passionate about.”
